Taking Care of Business

One of the reasons we gather every two years is to conduct Fraternity business. The Business Meetings are full of formality and tradition. After the Parade of Flags, Melissa Hashem (Theta Phi, California State University, Fullerton) welcomed everyone to her home state. “There is something so special about finally being in a room filled with sisters from all across the globe,” she said.

As per tradition, a member of one of our newest chapters gave the respons. Kate Brague (Iota Tau, The University of Utah) said, “Thank you to everyone in this room who has contributed to the growth and success of our beloved Zeta Tau Alpha. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I am excited to celebrate alongside you this weekend and beyond.”

In addition to Roll Call, National President Dinah Jackson Laughery recognized the more than 100 women who helped make Convention possible. “The first ZTA Convention in 1903 had 22 people present,” she said. “This week, these women have worked hard to welcome over 1,000 of our sisters.”

One highlight of the Business Meeting was Dinah’s State of the Fraternity and the Passing of the Purple. Dinah shared, “The Passing of the Purple is not an “official” ceremony, but rather a celebration of gratitude for the former National Presidents who join us at Convention. It is a moment made possible by their continued devotion, and it symbolizes the seamless transition of leadership.”

Ten Former National Presidents shared how different parts of The Creed continue to influence ZTA’s past, present, and future. Dinah shared that this biennium has been about thoughtful change. “We were not afraid of change, and we can see those changes making our Fraternity stronger.”

“Change can be challenging and frustrating,” she said, “but when change is done well, it is effective and invigorating. By rooting our changes in our Creed and our values, we have successfully moved Zeta Tau Alpha forward into the next biennium.”

To conclude the Business Meeting, National Ritual Committee Chair Malaea Nelms Seleski shared updates about the Ritual on the Road pilot program and the updated College Service Book. International Office’s Chief Operating Officer Carrie Armentrout Hoffeditz also shared information about the new all-in-one ZetaBase. The room erupted in cheers when Carrie explained that members will now have only one login for all things ZTA!
